A Little Story

Monica: My best friend came out to California for five days with her two daughters to visit family and fortunately for me, her family isn't too far away from where I live. Our time together was way too short, but I was happy just to be with her and bask in the warmth of her being. She is such a tender and patient mama and I love how motherhood has only magnified the essence of her spirit that I love so much.

Evelyn: Have been working happily to complete a piece of work. I usually am unsure of my feelings for a piece right off, and it grows on me as I go. In fact, I am never even sure if I am done with a piece and sometimes wonder if there is more. "Is there more?" much like the phrase I use when I am listening intently to the vulnerable open space of another being as they share a story. That is art, but I am both the listener and the storyteller.

Making Art (2)

Evelyn: All the ways we entertain ourselves...

Spectators

Evelyn: When we first moved in, I hung up the whiteboard, which quickly became the collector of things too fun to keep in albums or boxes... so instead it keeps an eye on me in the kitchen when I cook.

Artification

Evelyn: At the competition, different groups were building Rubik cube mosaics... later in the evening, my Birthday present was a ticket to a cirque de sol show. Extraordinary fun.

Making Art

Evelyn: I spent the most part of my day in Sarasota, enjoying the creative journey of art journalism with a bunch of fabulous ladies. It has been a while since I have taken out my supplies and given myself permission to play. Feels warm.

Glitterfish

Evelyn:  I see that Monica is slowly making her nest, as they have settled into their home after waiting months to have it in place. I am making my usual to Ybor, fascinated by the old ads projected on the wall during dance.

Art Deco

Evelyn:  St. Augustine and doors that are open. Each day provides opportunity for opening and shutting doors to the parts of my life that are in movement. I love Flagler College, and the intricate design, wood-work, and sculptures.

Choices

Evelyn: I love projects. This one isn't mine... but the idea of helping with the choices is delightful.

Art, Art, I miss you...

Evelyn: Art, Art I miss you... I don't think this pile is supposed to be holding dust, right?

Media Consumption

Evelyn: Monica & Michael gave me a spectacular Shel Silverstein adult picture book that follows the path of relationships of every kind. I love it, not only for the art, but for the many subtle messages...

On the Fridge

Evelyn: Justin began a series of art images that caught my attention. It has been lovely having them hanging on my fridge with other examples of his life.

Tokens

Evelyn: My dear friend Jamie is soon to get married. I take this weekend and paint my heart out, something to represent the fire and water personalities, and the tenderness I so enjoy in them both. It is a gift, that is spread on two canvases representing the separateness and connection that exists within unique,  timeless, loving relationships. I was stunned to find Monica's image a brilliant match, perhaps a token of gratitude tied gently to a tree.

Evening Rituals

Evelyn: My dancing partner, Ed, and I couldn't quite time getting to a dance event after work as usual, so he invited me to the Largo Community Playground to dance, instead, on the play equipment. The summer is slowly creeping in on us, but the evenings still tolerable. And aside from dancing, there were spurts of jungle-gym climbs, avoidance of hot lava as we balanced and jumped from place to place, and a few dives down the slides. The park is lovely, and it was a good change from the everyday "grown-up."

Monica: It's a ritual on some evenings, Michael making the popcorn before we snuggle up together on the couch to watch a movie. He has a particular method which includes melting a whole stick of butter (we don't use it all!) in the little green "butter melter" I found at an antique shop in Tucson. While the butter melts, he heats the oil for the popcorn, then tosses the kernels in at the right time and cranks the handle of the popcorn maker just so until the batch is perfectly popped. He drizzles the butter over the popcorn and shakes just the right amount of salt over it all while smacking my hand away from stealing a few bites.

Matchbox

Evelyn: I picked up these little matchbox "wish-boxes" at Ybor's Nude Nites earlier this month. Inside it is filled with trinkets and sparkles and a small message of fortune. I loved them, intending to bring one back to Monica in April. The curator of the show made hundreds of them, for purchase, and I loved walking away with a momento of the experience and the delicate small images of women, real, imperfect, and round.

Little Bird

Evelyn: Monica and I have been sharing an art book in which we write and play and mail it back and forth. I have had it for quite a while, and spend more time looking through it than adding to it lately. I have a trip planned to Wilbur to see her, and I think I will save the postage and bring it along.

Start of Something Beautiful

Evelyn: I took myself outside today, and started in on a canvas. I haven't painted in months, and the feel of paint under my brush, the long strokes and bright colors, the burbles and hiccups of a tube being coaxed to let just a bit more out... all filled me with a warm hum of self gratification. This piece is headed with me to work, to hang on a wall in a VERY big, WHITE, artless, windowless, florescently lit office. I can hardly wait.

Stunner

Evelyn: I get quite a response from this necklace pretty regularly. It is a stunning little swirl of glass and I finally found a great black cord to hang it from. People often think I spent lots on it, and Michael's carried for less than $5 - little Miss Frugal!
